NewWind Energy Certificates |
Supplier name |
Community Energy, Inc. |
Address/location |
150 Strafford Avenue, Suite 110, Wayne, PA 19087 |
Short history |
Community Energy, Inc. (CEI) was founded in 1999 by leading
environmental groups with a mission to ignite the market and supply
the demand for new, locally-produced, "fuel free", renewable
electricity. CEI has helped bring over 270 megawatts (MW) of
new wind energy projects on-line in the Eastern United States.
Customers include 21 of the 25 largest wind purchases in the nation.
CEI expects to support new wind projects in New England in 2004 or 2005. |
Philosophy |
"Customers make new wind projects happen." CEI is a
for-profit company that brings customer support to specific
wind projects in each grid in which it operates. |
Form/features |
CEI's NewWindEnergy® residential and small customer
products are "certificates"
for wind energy, sold in blocks of 100 kWh. A typical contract
would be for 1 block per month for 12 months. |
Sources |
100% from wind facilities in the Mid-Atlantic
region (Pennsylvania and West Virginia). |
New |
100% new wind generation. |
Availability |
The availability of NewWindEnergy® in some grids
(notably New England) may be constrained, in which case
customers may purchase NewWindEnergy® certificates from
adjoining regions. |
Product certifications |
All NewWind Energy® certificates are Green-e certified. |
Emissions rates |
All NewWindEnergy® products are themselves zero-emission.
In addition, by virtue of their grid location, CEI's Mid-Atlantic
wind farms help offset CO2 and other emissions upwind
of Maine. |
Other benefits |
In addition to the public health and social benefits from
zero-emission wind generation, wind turbines use less than 5%
of the land area for electricity generation than do other
generation facilities. This small "footprint" allows more
productive land to be used for other purposes (e.g., farming,
recreation, etc.) |
Price per block |
NewWindEnergy® certificates for residential and small
customers are available in blocks of 100 kWh for $2.50 per block. |
Price per kWh |
2.5 c/kWh |
Billing options |
Credit card purchases are possible. Long-term agreements with
monthly billing options are welcome. |
Notable contract terms |
Because NewWind Energy® certificates represent the environmental
and production attributes of a specific amount of wind energy, they
are generally not a tax-deductible purchase. |
